ABOUT US

An Ambassador of Yamagata's Beauty Yamagata Symphony Orchestra as a Hub for Connecting YAMAGATA and the World

The Yamagata Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1972 by conductor Chiaki Murakawa. To Murakawa, music is as important to the growth of children as a nutritional glass of milk. A total of three million children have experienced the live performance of the Yamagata Symphony Orchestra since its founding.

"Mozart with Norichika Iimori"... After eight long years, "The Complete Symphonies of Mozart" won a special prize at the 55th Record Academy Awards (ONGAKU NO TOMO SHA CORP.) in 2017.

"New Era with Tetsuro Ban"... In 2019, after 20 years of performing in European opera houses, Tetsuro Ban was appointed as the Principal Conductor. The orchestra performed and streamed all of Beethoven's symphonies during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through this, he continues to spread the appeal of the Yamagata Symphony Orchestra and Yamagata to audiences in Japan and overseas.

Shaping the Future of Rural Yamagata
Through the Joy of Orchestra

The Yamagata Symphony Orchestra engages in a wide range of activities, including concert projects, educational projects, and regional exchange projects. We contribute to nurturing future musicians by fostering children’s sense of music, through education and exchange within the community.

While we play a role in youth and urban development, we are committed to artistic growth beyond the region in order to promote Yamagata to Japan and the world.
